CREATE THE LIFE YOU TRULY WANT

“You Can Have It All” Is a Lie — And It’s Burning Women Out

The most harmful thing ever sold to women wasn’t a diet pill or an anti-ageing cream.

It was a phrase: you can have it all.

It sounds empowering on the surface. And that’s exactly what makes it dangerous.

What “Having It All” Actually Costs

There is a body of research called the Wellbeing Paradox. Over the last 50 years, as women have gained more opportunities, more career access, more financial independence, and more freedom than any generation before us, our sense of wellbeing relative to men has declined.

Think about that. More opportunity. Less happiness.

Is it really that surprising? We didn’t trade one set of responsibilities for another. We added to them. Women were already running households, raising children, managing relationships, and holding families together. Then we added careers, businesses, and the expectation that we’d do all of it without complaint and still look like we had it together.

Having it all doesn’t liberate women. For most women, it exhausts them.

What is the Wellbeing Paradox?
The Wellbeing Paradox refers to research showing that despite significant gains in rights, opportunity, and freedom over the past 50 years, women’s self-reported happiness and sense of wellbeing has declined relative to men. More choice and more responsibility, without support or boundaries, creates more pressure, not more fulfilment.

What It Looks Like From the Inside

The women who come to work with Holly don’t look burnt out from the outside. They look like they have it all. Career, partner, kids, home, social life. The whole picture.

But there is a gap between how their life looks and how it feels. And that gap is widening.

Having it all is like a bucket with a hole in the bottom. You can keep filling it, keep pouring more in, hold it under the tap indefinitely. It still feels empty. Because the problem isn’t how much you have. It’s that there’s no structure holding any of it.

Why Women Don’t Admit This

Here’s the part nobody talks about. Women aren’t just burnt out from doing too much. They’re ashamed of it.

Because if we can have it all, and we can’t cope with it all, then something must be wrong with us.

That’s the trap inside the trap. The phrase “you can have it all” doesn’t just overload women. It silences them. It makes exhaustion feel like personal failure.

It isn’t. The goal was always unrealistic. The shame was never yours to carry.

What to Aim for Instead

Not having it all. Having your best life.

Those are not the same thing, and the difference matters.

Your best life is specific to you. It’s built around what you actually want, not what looks good from the outside or what the culture tells you a successful woman is supposed to want.

Here’s how to start:

  1. Work out what your ideal day looks like. Not a holiday, not a fantasy. A day you could live over and over and genuinely feel good about. What’s in it? What isn’t?
  2. Decide what you’re putting down. The women who have lives they genuinely love are not the ones doing everything. They are the ones who have made clear choices about what gets their energy and what doesn’t. Work out what that is for you.
  3. Build your boundaries. If you are trying to have it all, you almost certainly don’t have strong boundaries. You are saying yes when you mean no, and the cost of that is everywhere in your life. Work out where the yeses need to become nos.
  4. Drop the people pleasing. People pleasing and having it all go hand in hand. You’re doing it all and presenting a certain front to everyone while doing it. That is not sustainable. Someone will get upset when you start saying no. Let them.
  5. Let go of other people’s judgments. What other people think of you is none of your business. That is not a motivational line. It is a practical instruction. Don’t let it take up space in your head rent free.

The Life You Actually Want

You were not built to do everything. You were built to do what matters, well, and with enough left over to actually enjoy it.

The question is never how do I have it all. The question is what does my best life actually look like, and what do I need to let go of to get there.

That’s the work. And it’s worth doing.
