From the outside, your life looks sorted. You got the thing you were chasing. The business, the promotion, the title, the number finally sitting in your bank account. And somehow, standing right in the middle of the life you built, you feel like you are watching it through glass.
Flat. Disconnected. Like the world is carrying on out there and you are behind a window, not quite in it.
You cannot say it out loud either, because everyone keeps telling you how well you are doing. On paper you have no right to feel this way, so you push it down and keep moving.
Here is what I want you to understand, and it is the thing I wish someone had told me years earlier. That feeling is not what you are afraid it is. It is not a life sentence, and it does not mean something is wrong with you. It is information. And for as long as you keep pushing it down, it will keep quietly costing you the life you could be living.
I know this because I lived it. I had a business that was doing well, a great husband, great kids, clients I loved. And I was miserable. Every day had become the same thing on repeat, a horrible version of Groundhog Day, every hour of my time spent in service to everyone and everything else, with nothing left over for me.
The emptiness was not a malfunction. It was feedback. Feelings are one of the clearest ways we communicate with ourselves, if we know how to listen. And the message underneath this one is simple. You have outgrown where you are, and it is time to change.
What you have been doing until now served a purpose. It served who you were then. It is just not a fit any more.
Think of it like this. You built a beautiful house. Every detail planned to the last centimetre, every room finished to perfection. Then one day you walked in and realised the whole thing had been designed to someone else’s taste. Every room is lovely. None of it is actually yours.
The life is real. The success is real. It is just built to a set of plans you were handed a long time ago, by people who wanted good things for you and never once thought to ask what you actually wanted. You have the life you were trained for. You were so busy being excellent at everyone else’s expectations that you never stopped to ask whether it was the life you would have chosen.
Why do I feel empty when I have everything?
Because achievement and fulfilment are not the same thing. When a life is built around other people’s expectations instead of your own, hitting the goals will never quite land, because they were never truly yours. The emptiness is feedback, telling you that you have outgrown the woman who built this life.
That empty, disconnected feeling is not one single thing. In the women I work with, it almost always shows up as one of three. I call them the three Disconnects, and your first job is to work out which one is yours.
The first is the Numb Disconnect. You do not feel much of anything any more, good or bad. The highs are muted and so are the lows. This one usually shows up when you have been performing for so long that you have lost the signal for what you genuinely feel underneath it all.
The second is the Restless Disconnect. You get the thing, whatever it was, and you have already moved the goalposts before you have even put it down. Nothing lands. Nothing is ever enough. There is always a next thing, because every time something arrives you think, nope, not that either. This one usually shows up when you are chasing goals you inherited rather than ones you would have chosen.
The third is the Stranger Disconnect. You look around at a genuinely good life and it feels like it belongs to someone else. Like you are the understudy in your own show. You learned all the lines and sat through every rehearsal, but you never quite make it onto the main stage. This one shows up when you have built a life to everyone else’s specifications and lost contact with your own.
So what do you actually do with all of this? Do not rush to fix it. Work through it in order.
- Name it. Do not try to solve the disconnect before you have named it. Most of us carry a bit of all three, so this is about which one is most dominant, not picking one perfectly.
- Notice when it shows up. Once you have named it, start paying attention. What is the situation? Who are you with? What is quietly feeding the pattern?
- Ask the better question. In that moment, ask what the future version of you, the one who is not disconnected, would do differently. Then go and do that.
Here is what the disconnect has been trying to tell you this whole time. You are ready. The woman who built this life has done her job, and done it beautifully, and you get to thank her for that. But there is a next version of you who has been waiting for you to recognise her.
This feeling is not you losing yourself. It is your wake-up call. It is the future version of you making herself heard so that you can actually become her. So many women ignore her, or file her in the too-hard basket, or push her away as though she does not matter. I do not want that for you.
If any of this landed, the fastest way forward is not to work it all out alone the way I did. It is to work with someone who already has the map and has walked the ground ahead of you. That is exactly what Woman to Warrior is built for.
You are worthy of a great life too. Not just everyone else. So go and live with fierce grace.
